apple crumble

apple crumble

My mum used to make apple crumble for us growing up, serving it with cold vanilla ice cream. She always called it apple crumple and to this day, she still does. I made my own version of it recently and when I told her about it over FaceTime, she asked me to text her the recipe so she could try it as well, seeing that hers is buried deep in some hand written recipe book. I did so and she tried it, and according to her, my crumple was not crumply enough. So now she’s on a mission to recreate her own recipe so that I can have a more crumply apple crumple. While she does that, here’s my recipe first.

Recipe

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 Granny Smith Apples (green apples)

  • 1 tbsp white flour

  • 1/3 cup white sugar

  • Juice of 1 lemon

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Topping

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 1 cup white flour

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder

  • 125g unsalted butter, melted

  • Pinch of salt

Method

Peel the apples and then cut them into cubes (or slices if you prefer). Put the apples in your baking dish and sprinkle with flour, lemon juice, cinnamon and sugar. Toss it and make sure all the apples are well coated. Then spread them out evenly on the baking dish. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.

Next, place all the ingredients for the topping in a bowl and mix until clumps form. Spread over the apples, crumbling with fingers if required to get that crumbly topping. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and let stand for 10 minutes before serving with delicious vanilla ice cream.
